I had a great time seeing music a couple of Saturdays ago at The Monkey House. The show was billed as Winter Wonder-Glam and was a benefit to collect money and warm clothes for Spectrum Youth And Family Services.

Sad Turtle began the night with a jazzy rock instrumental set. They played some new songs and likely some classics. I should have studied their album closer before the show to be sure. Either way, I let myself get lost in the fun twists and turns of their glorious music. They played a very old song called Johnny Razor’s Totally Normal Candy Store (I think), and played a new one and asked us what it’s name should be. The song kept rising all the way through so I suggested He Is Risen And Appears On Toast, since that’s the way their titles tend to go. They closed the set with a majestic version of Nautical By Nature that kept me in a happy place.

Up next was a blistering rock trio from Boston called People Person. They were fast and loud and pretty great. They played maybe nine songs with the drummer and guitar player switching in the middle of the set. The singer screamed out the words to the short songs and the whole set was wrapped up in about 15 minutes. It was furious and fun.

The final band of the night came on and raged hard. Burning Monk are a Rage Against The Machine cover band and they sounded great. I’ve always appreciated their music but don’t know it well so I don’t know what songs were played. The audience recognized them and we all had a great time. It was yet another wonderful night of music in our town
