I had a great time seeing music last night at Radio Bean. I always seem to have a conflict when Ryan Ober plays so when I saw a 7-8pm show on a Wednesday, I had to go. The walk downtown was lovely, give or take dodging some deep long puddles. I got in and settled and he soon took the stage and started to play. He sat and he sang and played electric guitar and talent just oozed out of his voice and fingers. His playing all night was complex and powerful. His sound ranged from blues to indie rock and most songs had a mix of the styles. He began with a song about a Kansas City sweetheart looking so good so far away. The second one told the tale of how it’s way too hot for flowers in Tucson. A cover of That’s All Right, Mama followed and was very cool. A new song about how his friends say he can’t get away from the blues was tremendous. A cover of Prince’s Kiss had a country rock vibe and a bit of audience participation. I went to the bar for another drink and listened amusedly as he sang about how the strongest drink you’ve got won’t mess with my head. Another blues song about my babe don’t stand no cheating followed. I did not get the origin of the next cover song but it had a great indie feel and was fantastic. It was something about the fire almost burning again. He kept the mood upbeat with Shake It With Your Ladies Love, at least I think that’s how it went. He then switched to the old green guitar and played some slide. He shook his fingers so the one holding the slide gave the notes a little extra vibrato. It was enchanting to watch and listen too. He ended the night with a bluesy instrumental version of Amazing Grace that flowed into another bluesy jam.

I left shortly after the last night and took the short warm happy walk home.
