I had a great time seeing music at Radio Bean last Wednesday. I’ve always been impressed with Milton Busker and this time he was playing with a couple of other guys. I arrived at the Bean just before the 7pm start time and got settled just as the show started. Milton played acoustic, sang lead, and used a tablet with his feet to trigger some key sounding effects. The gentleman on his left played acoustic guitar counter rhythms, sang some backing vocals and played harmonica. The gentleman on his right switched off between mandolin and electric mandolin and added backing vocals. The effect gave Milton’s songs more of a folk feel than I’m used to. His songs have a quiet intensity that was a bit diffused as a trio. A couple of songs in, they did a super-smooth killer version of Dogs At The Door and the orchestration focused the intensity of the song. The set was not super long, and I was really only beginning to understand the back an forth flow, when they wrapped up with a sweet pre-Halloween version of I Put A Spell On You. I really enjoyed the show, even if I still haven’t wrapped my head around it. I guess I’ll have to give it a try next time he plays!
