The Ryan Ober band at Radio Bean February 11, 2014   Leave a comment

I had a good time seeing music Tuesday night. I got out of work at 7:30, was home by 8 and was walking to Radio Bean at 8:30. The Ryan Ober band was due on at 8:30, so I did not think I would miss much. The band were still setting up as I walked in the door, so I found a seat, settled in, and soon it was showtime.
With an electric guitar player, keyboard player, mandolin player, Creston Lea on bass, and Jeremy Frederick on drums, Ryan led them through a fun indie rock song to open the show. The next song was a country song, which was good but didn’t bring me over the top. That’s more of commentary on me than they way they beautifully played it. The third song was another indie pop rock song, and reminded me a lot of early Ellvis Costello and a bit of Adrian Belew. Most of the songs that followed had a mix of indie and western, to varying degrees. Supernatural had a nice rhythm to the title line, and had a moody western feel. Deborah Mars rocked hard. Chick A Dee Dee saw the band swap instruments around, and they closed with a solid indie rocker.
The 45 minute show was a lot of fun and expertly played. I ducked out shortly after they wrapped it up, and had a gentle, happy walk home. I’m so glad I put in the effort!
